There’s nothing quite like traditional furniture, is there? And, indeed, there really is nothing like deep buttoned furniture – such as the famous Chesterfield sofas that date back hundreds of years. They are generally rare in the age of modern sofas and upholstery, but we think that makes them all the more precious. That’s why here at Jerome Shorter, we’re proud to offer a deep buttoned upholstery service that is second to none in terms of quality.

How Deep Buttoning Works

Deep buttoning is not just a style, it’s an art form, which can only be carried out by experienced, master craftsmen. Thankfully, we only employ the very best, and our staff are classically trained and encouraged to take extra time, if they need, to ensure their work is done to the highest possible standards.

Deep buttoning works when buttons are pressed into deep filled upholstered furniture, such as a sofa or armchair, and then fastened from either underneath or the rear. They are fastened tight, which creates the iconic deep buttoned effect that so many people know, love, recognise and appreciate. Generally, the buttons are arranged in a diamond form.

Furniture such as the classic and much-loved Chesterfield sofa can have more than 200 buttons pressed deeply into the upholstery. Just one look at a sofa like this shows just how intricate and delicate the process is. All of our deep buttoned furniture pieces are created bespoke, and by hand, using specialist needles and equipment.

Jerome and his team has just completed the recovering of eight large leather dining chairs and a full set of fabric outdoor furniture (chaise, sofas and 10 dining chairs). These had all been owned and used for many years and we had feared they would require replacing. Not so! I had three pieces(a sofa and two wing chairs) to re-upholster which had never been in the same room together before. Mr. Shorter took pictures of the pieces and the carpet they had to coordinate with and gave me some design ideas. This did not work. He recommended stores where I could obtain swatches of fabric. After numerous attempts on my own Mr Shorter came again to my apartment and selected fabrics I had not thought to combine. A perfect choice and I could not be happier with the result-a fresh, colourful, contemporary design for the entire room. Excellent reupholstering for old furniture. I highly recommend Mr. Shorter to anyone who wishes to add new life to one or more pieces.
