Headboards upholstery: origins

Headboards have been with us since the ancient Egyptians first added them to royal beds in an effort to keep nighttime drafts off the monarch. The Romans adopted this idea which remained popular among European aristocracy right through the Middle Ages.

Upholstered headboards made their first appearance during the 17th century as the well-to-do moved away from canopied beds and embraced the tufted headboard’s brand of intimate opulence. Since that time their popularity has ebbed and flowed, but recently they have returned to favour in a big way.


 

The Right Upholstered Headboard for You

Creating the right upholstered headboard for your bedroom requires careful consideration of a number of factors. First of all, oils from skin – and especially hair – must be taken into account. Choose the wrong material and it won’t be long before oil stains and damages the headboard.

 

If you have pets that are allowed into the bedroom you should also be aware that some fabrics are veritable magnets for pet hair. So you will need to work closely with our design experts to choose a fabric that’s both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

 

Upholstered headboards can also be pretty thick and stand away from the wall several inches. So if your bedroom is on the smallish side you may want to go easy on the tufting, lest it make your small room seem even smaller.

As with our other furnishings, it will usually take between 4 and 6 weeks to produce upholstered headboards once we get a confirmed order. Jerome and his team has just completed the recovering of eight large leather dining chairs and a full set of fabric outdoor furniture (chaise, sofas and 10 dining chairs). These had all been owned and used for many years and we had feared they would require replacing. Not so! I had three pieces(a sofa and two wing chairs) to re-upholster which had never been in the same room together before. Mr. Shorter took pictures of the pieces and the carpet they had to coordinate with and gave me some design ideas. This did not work. He recommended stores where I could obtain swatches of fabric. After numerous attempts on my own Mr Shorter came again to my apartment and selected fabrics I had not thought to combine. A perfect choice and I could not be happier with the result-a fresh, colourful, contemporary design for the entire room. Excellent reupholstering for old furniture.
